Co. M First Arkansas
1917-1918
The following is a newspaper clipping found in Mrs. George Rex (Mary) Martin's scrapbook:
IN MEMORY OF A SOLDIER
Private Carl K. Allmond, son of G. W. and M. J. Allmond, was born at Gainsville, Arkansas, October 9, 1898,
with his parents moved to Cross County in March 1908.
Volunteered and enlisted in Co. M. First Arkansas, and left Wynne April the 9th, 191 7.
Went in training at Fort Logan H. Roots, was transferred to Camp Pike, and from there
to Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, in October 1917, in February 1918, he volunteered for oversea service and landed in France in March.
He was wounded in action July 18,1918. We don't know just how he died but we know he died for his home and loved ones.
He made the supreme sacrifice for his country while he was only a boy.
Yet he filled a man's place in the fighting line and died a man's death.
We will never know what he suffered after being wounded for he was burnt with mustard gas.
But we do know that his sufferings are over and we thank God that he had the care in the Base Hospital and had a christian burial.
We also want to thank the Red Cross for the kindness shown him as we have been assured that he had the best of attention and while our hearts are sad we realize that God does all things for the best. HIS MOTHER.
Carl K. Allmond's name in inscribed on the Cross County Veterans Memorial at the Cross County Courthouse, Wynne, Arkansas.
