Roy Barney Mahon was born 5 February 1895 at Stuttgart, Arkansas, the son of
James Gray and Bobbie Simmons Mahon. He had five brothers and sisters: Lee, Reginald, Gwynne, Arnold and Ruby. Prior to joining the Army, he worked as a well driller in the oil fields at Gamble Mines, Alabama.
Roy was inducted into the Army 15 October 1917 in New Orleans,
Louisiana and was sent to France.
He participated in Battles at Chateau Thierry, Toul Sector, St Mihiel and was gassed 26 October 1918 in the Argonne Forrest. He was discharged 17 March 1919 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
His Army records read Barney R. Mahon.
He married Lois Pearl Hertel. They had one daughter, Bonnie Jean and four sons: James Lewis, Donald Waldo, Robert Leroy and Ronald Dee. Roy started rice farming around Hickory Ridge, Arkansas.
In 1950, Roy was elected as the first Mayor of the newly incorporated town of Hickory Ridge.
He served three terms and had begun his fourth term on January 1, 1975,
Roy Barney Mahon died 31 January 1975 and was buried in the Lewis Cemetery near Hickory Ridge, Arkansas.
Note: Mr. Mahon's military discharge filed at the Cross County Courthouse reads, "Barney R. Mahon." His obituary and other records read "Roy Barney Mahon." Birth date and other information are the same.
