Dolphus Sams, Jr. was born 17 January 1946 in Wynne, Arkansas.
He was one of
four children born to Dolphus, Sr. and Martha Marie Mason Sams. His brother and sisters were: Daniel, Lorene and Faye and his half brother was Larry
Sams. Dolphus graduated from Wynne High School in 1964 and worked at a gas station for two months prior to entering the Army.
Dolphus was inducted into the Army 19 October 1965 at Local Board 19, Wynne, Arkansas.
After receiving basic training and specialized training, he was assigned to
Vietnam in October 1966 and served there one year. As a Combat Engineer and Construction Equipment Operator, Dolphus supported the Army Infantry by repairing damaged equipment and structures and erecting new structures in a combat environment.
He was discharged 18 October 1967 at Fort Carson, Colorado. He earned the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Defense Medal.
After leaving the Army, Dolphus worked at Halstead Industries in Wynne for 18 years.
He was the father of one son, Adam. His hobbies were hunting and fishing.
Catching
large mouth bass was a rewarding past time that resulted in a number of trophies on
his
wall.
Dolphus Sams, Jr. died in August 1985 and was buried in Vanndale
Cemetery,
Vanndale, Arkansas.
