      Arthur Thomas Shaver was born 17 December 1925 in Birdeye, Arkansas, the fifth child and second son of Arthur M. and Agnes Taylor Shaver. He grew up with five brothers and sisters: Eloise, Georgia, Gladus, Virginia and Grady. Arthur attended the Birdeye Elementary School and graduated from the Parkin High School.
    Arthur was inducted into the Army in March 1944 at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and was sent to Long Beach, California for basic training. He was assigned to bases in Texas; South Carolina; Seattle, Washington; New Jersey; Virginia; Massachusetts and Fort Riley, Kansas. His overseas assignments were Okinawa; the Philippine Islands; Ankara, Turkey; Nuremberg and Munich, Germany; and Vietnam (1969). In March 1970, he returned to a base in Massachusetts and received his discharge after 28 years of service. His duties, for 24 of his 28 years, were communications related and highly classified.
    Arthur's brother, Gladus, served in the Army for 28 years and his brother, Grady, served in the Navy for 22 years.
    Arthur married Mary Hackett and they are the parents of two sons, John and Michael. After his discharge, he worked for the Commonwealth of  Massachusetts in the Unemployment Division. Arthur and Mary live in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
