Gladus William Shaver was born 7 November 1918 in
Birdeye, Arkansas, the third child and first son of Arthur M.
and Agnes Taylor Shaver. He grew up with five brothers and sisters: Eloise, Georgia, Virginia, Thomas and Grady. Gladus attended the Birdeye Elementary School and the Parkin High School.
Gladus entered the Army in 1936 and took his basic training at Fort McClellan, Anniston, Alabama. After basic training, he was assigned to the 4th Tank Company and served in Camp Cook, California; Fort Chaffee, Arkansas; Fort Knox, Kentucky; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Beside serving in the 4th Tank Company, he served in the Signal Corps and the Military Police. His overseas assignments were in Ansbach, Germany; the Occupation of Japan and the Korean Conflict. His last assignment was in the Panama Canal Zone. He returned to Fort McClelland, Alabama to be discharged in
1962 after 26 years of service.
His brother, Grady, retired after 21 years in the Navy and his brother, Arthur, retired
from the Army after 28 years of service.
Gladus married Lovella Williamson and they were the parents of three daughters: Joyce, Joan and Deborah. After his military service, he worked for the State of Alabama in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division.
Gladus William Shaver died 1 May 1999 and was buried with military honors in Forestlawn Gardens, Anniston, Alabama.
