Purple Heart

      Ollie Kay Sanders was born 15 September 1922 in Cross County, Arkansas, the son of William David and Beatrice Grantham Sanders.  He grew up in Cross County and attended school at New Hope and then worked in the timber industry .
    Ollie joined the Army 20 July 1943 and was inducted 10 August 1943. He spent most of his time in Italy and was in the fighting in the Alpennes Mountains. On 15 September 1944, they "broke" the Golthic line that Hitler said couldn't be broken.  During the fighting on 19 September 1944, Ollie was hit by shrapnel and for this wound he received the Purple Heart.   He, also, received the Good Conduct Medal;  the EAME Theater Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars; World War II Victory Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.
    He was discharged 9 November 1945 and returned home.   He maried Ruby NeIl Grubbs and they are the parents of Esther, Donna, Dorothea and Vernon.   Ollie felt very lucky to be able to come home!!   He went to work for the County Road Department.   Ollie enjoys fishing and hunting since he retired.
