Purple Heart

     James Earnest Scott (Scotty) was born 18 October 1918 at Vanndale, Arkansas, the only son of John Turner and Ollie Elizabeth Peeler Scott. He grew up on the small family farm with three sisters: Ruby, Myrtle and Bertha. Before entering the Army, he farmed with his father .
    Scotty was inducted into the Army 24 November 1941 at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas. He served overseas more than two years and he was involved in the campaigns in Northern France; Normandy; Sicily and Tunisia. Scotty was proficient as a machine gunner and served as a Squad Leader. On 28 March 1943, Scotty was critically injured and for these wounds, he received the Purple Heart. In addition, he earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge; the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal; the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
    Scotty was discharged 12 May 1945 at Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. His injuries continued to be so serious that he receive 100% Service-Connected Disability from the Veterans Administration.
    He married Eller Zine Loyd and they had three children: James Roy; Mary Elizabeth and Deborah Ann. Scotty resumed farming in the Pleasant Hill Community and did so until his death 22 February 1988. He was buried at Akins Cemetery near Pleasant Hill.
